As of today, those who send flyers to North Korea can face three years in prison

The new law bans flyers, money and goods from being sent to the DPRK. Some activists say they’ll do it anyway.

A controversial South Korean law that can send people to jail for launching informational flyers to North Korea went into effect on Tuesday, despite repeated outcry from activists and free speech groups.

South Korea’s “anti-leaflet law,” which was passed in Dec. 2020, bans individuals from sending flyers, money and goods — including activists’ favored USBs filled with foreign media — to North Korean territory. Violators face up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won ($27,200).
