Humanitarian aid to North Korea not subject to sanctions, Pompeo insists

DPRK, other UN member states recently called for sanctions to be lifted amid COVID-19 pandemic

Humanitarian assistance to North Korea is not subject to sanctions, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo insisted Tuesday, in a direct challenge to Pyongyang's claims that UN and U.S. restrictions on trade -- and not DPRK leadership's own policies --have caused the North Korean people to suffer.

Pompeo's comments come as he and President Trump have promised in recent days that the U.S. would be willing to send aid to the North -- and has even tried to do so -- if the need arises during the COVID-19 pandemic.
