The Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST) welcomed its first-ever female students this year, a post on the school’s Facebook page said on Friday.
The 10 female students join PUST’s select enrollment, entering at the undergraduate level.
“Our new Freshman class has arrived and we now have girl students for the first time !!!” the Facebook post read, accompanied by an image of the class.
PUST, which began operating in 2010, is North Korea’s first and only privately funded university and is jointly run by North Korea and the Northeast Asia Foundation (NAFEC).
The university is largely staffed by foreign teachers who conduct their lessons in English and who, like PUST founder and president James Kim, are mostly devout Christians.
Reached for further comment, PUST staff declined to elaborate on the reason for adding female students or the timing of their addition, stating that it was an internal matter.
Update: The number of students, originally listed as 20, has been amended to 10 following information relayed from administrators at PUST. The students entered at the undergraduate level and not as nursing students as first reported.
