North Korea’s satellite launch showcases the growing risks of status quo

Condemning DPRK and issuing new sanctions do little to deter it from launches, raising need for new approaches

North Korea watchers could be forgiven for thinking they’d become trapped in a time loop after the DPRK’s failed satellite launch last week, as the U.S. and like-minded countries issued condemnations and announced sanctions in what has become a well-established ritual that follows every North Korean launch.

The U.N. secretary-general also slammed North Korea’s space launch as a violation of international sanctions, which prohibit the country from using ballistic missile technology.
