US, ROK to establish nuclear consultation group to ‘manage’ North Korean threat

Summit declaration emphasizes South Korea will uphold nuclear nonproliferation, amid talk of Seoul going nuclear

The U.S. and South Korea will establish a new platform for joint nuclear execution and planning, presidents Joe Biden and Yoon Suk-yeol announced after a summit meeting Wednesday, as the allies seek to reinforce efforts to deter North Korean nuclear weapon use.

But their joint declaration also stresses that Yoon has promised to abide by agreements on nuclear nonproliferation and peaceful use of nuclear power, after his controversial remark earlier this year floating the possibility of nuclear armament.
