North Korea fires short-range ballistic missile toward East Sea, Seoul says

South Korea calls test ‘grave provocation’ and vows closer cooperation with US as aircraft carrier arrives on peninsula

North Korea launched one short-range ballistic missile toward the East Sea on Sunday morning, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

It’s Pyongyang’s first known missile test since mid-August, when it launched cruise missiles from the west coast, and comes just days after the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan arrived in South Korea’s southern port city of Busan in what observers have called a show of force against the North.
