US diplomatic boycott of Olympics a setback for dialogue with DPRK: experts

Decision is likely to drive China and North Korea closer, while scuttling hopes for breakthrough like at 2018 Games

The U.S. announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympic Games on Monday, in another setback for Seoul’s hopes to use the international event scheduled for Feb. 2022 to achieve a breakthrough in the peace process on the Korean Peninsula.

The White House cited China’s “ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity” in Xinjiang and “other abuses” for not sending official representatives to the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, though the U.S. will still send its athletes.
