South Korea issued a rare military alert after detecting signs of a person crossing the eastern border on Wednesday, later capturing an unnamed North Korean man at around 9:50 a.m.

The North Korean man crossed the inter-Korean border for unknown reasons and was found about an hour after the military issued the alert, according to South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense.

“We will carry out an investigation [about the man], including how he crossed the border and came southward, and whether he intends to defect to the South,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said on Wednesday after “safely” capturing
