Chinese experts on North Korea, from contingency planning to economic reforms

Examining what scholars choose to focus on can offer some insights into evolving bilateral ties

When it comes to the Chinese-North Korean relationship, two topics seem to have absorbed a large share of attention of late, and quite rightly.

The first is Xi Jinping’s relationship with Kim Jong Un: analysts need to unpack what was promised and hinted at at their three successive meetings in China, and, following on from that, the meaning of Xi’s absence at Pyongyang’s big anniversary party and his stance going forward also needs to be deconstructed.
