From the time Franklin Roosevelt led the fight against fascism to the present day, much of the world has come to rely on American leadership.

Even when American foreign policy was steered by less capable hands, the tradition of pursuing (or at least pretending to pursue) a messianic vision of a liberal world order that is protected by American military and economic might was never questioned.
