On the 26th March 2010 at 21:30 the Cheonan broke in half and sank approximately 1 nautical mile Southwest of Baengnyeong Island, s just below the Northern Limit Line. Just five minutes earlier at 21:25 an explosion was reported by the ship’s crew. Of the 104 crew on board, 46 were killed.

The Cheonan (PCC-772) was a Pohang-class corvette of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy, commissioned in 1989 and due for decommissioning in 2019.
