Holiday gifting season is upon us and this year, NK News presents its first annual holiday gift guide for North Korea Watchers.
But before we go ahead, let’s take a look back at some of the interesting gifts that Kim Jong Un sent and received in the past year of summit meetings:
March: Remember when Kim Jong Un made a secret train trip to Beijing before the first inter-Korean summit of the year? In his first trip abroad since 2011, Kim Jong Un was showered with high-end liquor and various luxury watches and cigarettes, courtesy of Xi Jinping, in true tributary fashion.
May: The White House announced plans to manufacture commemorative Kim-Trump summit coins ahead of the June summit, awkwardly before President Trump canceled the meeting. The summit eventually went ahead as scheduled.
September: Following the third inter-Korean summit in September, Kim Jong Un sent South Korea two tons of wild pine mushrooms, which President Moon shared with 4,000 family members separated by the Korean War.
September: We’ll also never forget these white Pungsan dogs gifted to the Blue House by Kim Jong Un. Named Gomi and Songgang, the “peace dogs” now live with the Moon family in the Blue House with the President’s own dog Tori. A month later, Gomi gave birth to six puppies.
November: Days after the new “peace” puppies were born, South Korea reciprocated the mushrooms by sending 200 tons of Jeju Island tangerines. Kim Jong Un also distributed the fruits among youth and workers in Pyongyang.
