Seoul released the annual Intermediate-term National Defense Plan two days after the ROK military was unable to take down North Korean drones that flew several miles into South Korean airspace, and a week after the National Assembly passed a record $44.7 billion defense budget for the new year. The Yoon Suk-yeol administration announced its updated five-year defense plans on Wednesday, calling for the military to acquire new capabilities ranging from electromagnetic pulse weapons to artificial intelligence systems in order to counter emerging North Korean threats.
