Lee visits island North Korea shelled, calls for deterrent to ‘overwhelm’ enemy

ROK president was briefed on Chinese ships near disputed maritime border but did not address Pyongyang’s NLL claims

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung visited Yeonpyeong Island near the maritime border with North Korea on Wednesday, one day before the 76th anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War.

It marked the first time a sitting president has visited the Marine Yeonpyeong Unit in 14 years, since Lee Myung-bak’s inspection in 2012. North Korea bombed the island in Nov. 2010, causing the deaths of two South Korean civilians and two military personnel.
