North Korea launched a military spy satellite from its main spaceport on Monday evening but failed to put the satellite into orbit after the carrier rocket exploded, DPRK state media confirmed.

Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced in a press release that an apparent military reconnaissance satellite took off on a space launch vehicle around 10:44 p.m. KST from Sohae Satellite Launching Station on North Korea’s west coast.

The rocket bearing the satellite flew southward, but JCS stated that it subsequently detected multiple fragments over North Korean waters, later adding that South Korea and the U.S. are still analyzing
