UN body raises concern about South Korea’s detention of North Korean arrivals

Human Rights Committee calls for legal protections for defectors facing investigation to prevent forced repatriation

A U.N. committee has expressed concern about the detention of North Korean escapees upon their arrival in South Korea, calling for the ROK to enact legal safeguards for defectors and guarantee that they will not be subject to forced repatriation.

The U.N. Human Rights Committee made the recommendations in its Universal Periodic Review published on Friday, after a human rights group raised the issue to the committee.
