North Korea launched a rocket thought to carry a spy satellite on Tuesday night, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

The launch appears to be Pyongyang’s third attempt to put a military reconnaissance satellite in orbit, after failed attempts in May and August.

The JCS said the rocket was launched at 10:43 p.m. KST toward the south from the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground in the northwest, a trajectory consistent with pre-announced rocket stage drop zones in the Yellow Sea off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula and further south in the Pacific Ocean.
