Seoul boasts of space vehicle launch as it looks to better surveil North Korea

ROK says last week’s surprise nighttime test was part of efforts to develop space-based reconnaissance capabilities

South Korea’s surprise test of a homegrown solid-propellent space launch vehicle last week was part of the military’s efforts to develop space-based reconnaissance capabilities, the defense ministry said Monday, as Seoul looks to better surveil North Korea in the future.

The state-affiliated Agency for Defense Development (ADD) conducted the test flight on Friday night without publicizing the launch in advance, which the ministry previously attributed to “military security issues.”
