A giant unfinished North Korean beach resort is set to host international tourists for a marathon next October, a Japanese organizer claims on a website promoting the event, despite the country’s ongoing border closures.

While plans for a “Wonsan-Kalma International Marathon” appear to have been in the works for years, the supposed upcoming event is not set in stone and likely depends on Pyongyang’s COVID-19 policies. 

Kim Jong Un kicked off the Wonsan-Kalma megaproject on the country’s east coast in early 2018. Dozens of hotel towers, shopping centers and recreation facilities appeared along a 3.5-mile-long (5.5 km) stretch of
