US Space Force expands to Indo-Pacific amid growing North Korea missile threat

Experts say new division largely ‘symbolic’ but future expansion may contribute to deterrence against North Korea

The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) launched a new Space Force unit on Tuesday as part of its efforts to strengthen “integrated deterrence” in the region, but experts see little beyond a “symbolic” show of force and say more remains to be done.

Space Force is responsible for leading Washington’s defense operations in space, including the detection of ballistic missile launches and surprise missile attacks — an area where North Korea poses an increasing threat in the Indo-Pacific region.
