The U.S. and South Korea test-fired five surface-to-surface missiles toward the East Sea on Tuesday night in response to North Korea’s latest ballistic missile test, and one South Korean missile failed after launch, Seoul’s defense ministry confirmed to NK News on Wednesday morning. 

The failed missile crash-landed less than a half mile away from civilian homes, an ROK military official told NK News later in the day.

The allies’ missile tests came after North Korea fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) over
