An Australian frigate has joined efforts to surveil ships smuggling sanctioned goods to and from North Korea, the latest deployment designed to clamp down on illicit maritime activities. 

The HMAS Arunta will visit unspecified waters to monitor “illegal ship-to-ship transfers of sanctioned goods bound for North Korea” as part of Operation ARGOS, Australia’s Department of Defence announced Friday.

The operation is one of Australia’s contributions to efforts by the Five Eyes intelligence sharing alliance — the other members of which include the U.S., U.K., Canada and New Zealand — to keep tabs on North Korea’s merchant fleet.
