US-ROK joint drills wrap up as North Korea denounces ‘nuclear wargame’

Pentagon says all countries have right to conduct military drills and that Ulchi Freedom Shield is defensive in nature

The U.S. and South Korea wrapped up two weeks of large-scale joint military exercises on repelling a hypothetical North Korean invasion and launching a counterattack on Thursday, according to Seoul’s defense ministry.

The allies conducted the Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercises from Aug. 22 to Sept. 1 following five days of preliminary civil defense drills, in their first field training since 2018. The exercises included live-fire drills utilizing multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) and air-to-surface Hellfire missiles.
