Biden gives short shrift to North Korea issues in major UN speech

Expert says US president’s brief mention of DPRK sanctions violations reflects poor prospects for denuclearization talks

U.S. President Joe Biden accused North Korea of “blatantly” violating international sanctions despite Washington’s efforts to restart bilateral talks, briefly mentioning DPRK issues in a major speech to the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday.

But experts said Biden’s remarks largely ignored North Korea in a departure from Donald Trump’s speeches at the U.N., stating that this reflects the intractability of Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs.
