ASEAN urges North Korea to ‘exercise self-restraint’ and stop missile tests

Southeast Asian nations use tougher language to condemn DPRK launches than in statement earlier this year

Foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) condemned North Korea’s barrage of missile tests this year in a joint statement, calling for Pyongyang to refrain from launches that “threaten peace and stability in the region and in the world.”

The ten Southeast Asian nations, which include countries friendly toward the DPRK, urged North Korea “to exercise self-restraint in order to de-escalate the tension and avoid actions that may further aggravate the situation,” according to the statement issued Friday.
