South Korea’s new intelligence chief will be former Park Geun-hye administration official Kim Kyou-hyun, President Yoon Suk-yeol announced on Wednesday.
Kim was tapped for director of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) after having previously served as a senior secretary for foreign and security policy as well as a deputy national security adviser and vice foreign minister under Park.
A career diplomat, Kim’s foreign policy experience is primarily U.S.-focused. He served in the foreign ministry’s North America bureau and at the ROK embassy in Washington.
