South Korea’s former peace and security affairs envoy who helped coordinate the first-ever U.S.-North Korea summit will join the incoming Yoon Suk-yeol administration as vice foreign minister, the president-elect announced Monday. 

Lee Do-hoon was Moon Jae-in’s top North Korea envoy from Sept. 2017 to Dec. 2020 and counterpart to Stephen Biegun during the Donald Trump administration. 

During Lee’s tenure, Trump held two summits with DPRK leader Kim Jong Un and Moon held three. Trump, Moon and Kim also met briefly at the inter-Korean border in mid-2019. Lee was also Seoul’s chief negotiator inside the U.S.-ROK Working Group, which handled sanctions
