Kim Jong Un: Nuclear forces are for more than just preventing war

North Korean leader says the country’s nukes serve a “secondary purpose” if the country’s core interests are threatened

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that the country’s nuclear weapons cannot be limited to “preventing war” when its “fundamental interests” are violated, suggesting that their offensive use remains on the table, North Korean state media reported on Tuesday.

“The fundamental mission of our nuclear forces is to deter a war," Kim reportedly said at a large-scale military parade Monday night. “But our nukes can never be confined to the single mission of war deterrence even at a time when a situation we are not desirous of at all is created on this land.”
