South Korea’s unification ministry called on the North to show a “wise and flexible” attitude toward a joint military drill with the U.S., saying Washington and Seoul have scaled the exercise down to a “minimum” level.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) on Sunday, the “defensive” springtime joint exercise will be held for nine days starting Monday.

JCS said that the U.S. and South Korea will conduct this week’s drill as a computer-simulated command post exercise (CPX). It also stated that the exercise is preparation for the full operational capability (FOC) test necessary for the transfer
