Kim Jong Un wants to boost the economy through science, tech and state control

The North Korean leader discussed industry development, foreign policy and military plans at an ongoing plenum meeting

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un demanded developments to scientific research, agriculture, fishing and telecommunications in a general overhaul of the country’s economic management, state media reported on Wednesday.

A day prior, North Korean officials gathered for the second day of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) plenary meeting, where Kim reportedly said that the country’s Cabinet and state economic guidance departments “should restore the function peculiar to them as economic organizer.” Kim made similar statements during the country’s politically-important Eighth Party Congress last month, leading some experts to believe North Korea will crackdown on private businesses.
