North Korea’s threatening message to the US is a covert nudge for negotiations

The DPRK said it will continue developing nuclear strike capabilities, but it still left the door open for diplomacy

With just a few days left before President-elect Joe Biden is expected to take the White House, North Korea released a series of hostile remarks that suggest Kim Jong Un is not ruling out future negotiations, but wants Washington to learn from President Donald Trump’s biggest mistakes.

On Saturday, state media reported that North Korean officials gathered for day four of the country’s Eighth Party Congress, where they decided to bolster long-range nuclear strike capabilities and stressed that nuclear weapons are for countering threats to its sovereignty. North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper also called the U.S. the “biggest, main enemy” and said that Washington’s DPRK foreign policy “never changes,” regardless of who’s in office.
