Rare North Korean Party Congress to take place ‘early January,’ Politburo says

Kim Jong Un chaired an unprecedented 12th Politburo meeting of the year on Tuesday

North Korea's upcoming Eighth Party Congress will be held in "early January," state media reported on Wednesday. A specific start date for the major political event — which will mark North Korea's second Party Congress in the last 40 years — still has not announced.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korean leadership gathered for the 12th Politburo of the year on Tuesday, where they reviewed lists of delegates who were "elected at the conferences of the Party organizations at all levels" nationwide. Officials also decided on the final list of delegates that will be allowed to attend the Party Congress.
