Updated at 7:10 p.m. KST to include remarks from the defense minister nominee

South Korea’s Presidential Blue House announced that Army Chief of Staff Suh Wook will become the new minister of national defense after a confirmation hearing slated for sometime in the next few weeks.

Suh, an ROK Army general, will replace the current Ministry of National Defense (MND) head Jeong Kyeong-doo, who has served in the position since Sept. 2018. South Korea’s National Assembly does not have the power to veto Suh’s nomination, but it can slow down the process or air out dissenting opinions during the hearing.
