New U.S. defense chief to visit South Korea in August: Pentagon

Secretary Esper’s visit to likely focus on North Korea, alliance issues, ROK MND says

Secretary Mark Esper will travel to Seoul in early August alongside stops in Hawaii, Sydney, Auckland, Tokyo, and Ulaanbaatar, the Department of Defense said Tuesday, in a trip expected to see discussions on North Korea-related issues.

Fresh off his confirmation as U.S. Secretary of Defense last week, Esper is set to “meet with key leaders to reaffirm defense relationships and conduct bilateral and multilateral meetings with senior officials,” the Pentagon said, without providing specific details on his trip to Seoul.
