Russia highlights need for North Korean security guarantees in talks with Pompeo

Foreign minister Lavrov also stressed need for trilateral Russia-China-U.S. talks on DPRK

Moscow hopes Washington will cooperate to provide security guarantees for North Korea as part of denuclearization negotiations, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday following a meeting in Sochi with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“We highlighted that the leadership of DPRK expects certain guarantees of security of their country reciprocated by denuclearization,” Lavrov said of his talks with Pompeo, echoing the main focus of President Vladimir Putin’s remarks after his summit with DPRK leader Kim Jong Un last month.
