The accuracy – or lack of – of North Korea’s missiles

Weapons such as the North's are more useful as instruments of terror than of precision

North Korea has a large missile arsenal, but the majority of them have very poor accuracy. Missile accuracy can be a slightly confusing statistic, so this article will break down what it means.

The accuracy of missiles is typically given in circular error probable, or CEP. CEP is a little bit of a weird number. The CEP of a missile indicate the area that a missile will hit 50 percent of the time. So if a missile has a CEP of 500 meters, then the missile will hit somewhere within 500 meters of its aim point only 50 percent of the time. This means that missiles statistically will not hit their desired aim point the overwhelming majority of the time. A high CEP (as in, an inaccurate missile) means that small targets, such as individual buildings or military formations, cannot be reliably targeted. High CEP missiles are typically used as weapons of terror aimed at cities or large populations, as any area that is hit will likely involve deaths.
