Japan’s Defense Ministry announced its order on Wednesday to shoot down a North Korean rocket if it were confirmed to drop in or near Japanese territory.

The order is to deter North Korea’s rocket launch, expected to take place this month, and is valid through February.

Yoshihide Suga, Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, told reporters on the same day that North Korea’s declaration of a satellite launch “certainly violates the UN Security Council Resolution.”

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also ordered that Japanese forces “cooperate with the U.S. and South Korea” to deter North Korea’s missile launch.
