The head of defector-activist group who had announced plans to launch balloons with regime-criticizing leaflets said Monday that he will cease sending leaflets to the North “for now.”
Park Sang-hak, leader of Fighters for a Free North Korea, told the Yonhap News Agency that the group would not go through with its plan to send the leaflets around March 26, nor would it send them on any other date for the time being.
“I see that North Korea is very afraid of the leaflets,” Park was quoted as saying. “(We will) not send the leaflets.”
The group planned to launch balloons carrying the leaflets to the North to mark the fifth anniversary of the ROKS Cheonan sinking, which a team of international investigators said North Korea carried out.
The North’s Korean People’s Army issued a warning on Saturday saying it would attack the leaflet senders if they ballooned anti-regime materials into the country.
Park suggested that North Korea should accept that it did sink the Cheonan and promise to make sure that such an incident will not happen again.
However, whether or not the North does as he advised, his group will not send the leaflets “for a while,” he said.
