North Korea wants human rights conference cancelled

Ambassador says Pyongyang's offer to attend, offer defense against allegations refused

North Korea has insisted that a conference on Tuesday regarding its human rights conditions should be cancelled and its ambassador threatened to respond “very strongly” if the event proceeds.

The event is to take place Tuesday, hosted by the nonprofit Center for Strategic & International Studies to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the release of the UN Commission of Inquiry’s report on human rights in the North. The members of the COI – UN special rapporteur on DPRK human rights Marzuki Darusman, Serbian human rights campaigner Sonja Biserko and the COI chair, Australian judge Michael Kirby – are scheduled to participate. Among its other speakers will be Georgetown professor Victor Cha – former adviser to President George W. Bush on North Korean affairs – along with former U.S. special envoy on UN human rights Robert King.
