North Korean media has confirmed the construction of hydroelectric power plants at the river of Chongchon, around 65km north of Pyongyang.

The plants, first reported on by the pro-North Choson Sinbo newspaper in December, will provide power to the DPRK’s capital.

The article in the Pyongyang Times, entitled “Scientists set to hit sci-tech development targets,” announces that construction on the plants is progressing. The new facilities are due to be completed in October.

“Those of the electric power industry are the putting of the assembly of generating equipment for multi-tier power stations on the Chongchon River on a scientific
