Security measures due to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s unannounced visit to Dandong caught locals off guard over the weekend, according to social media posts seen by NK News, as authorities closed roads and in some cases locked down residential compounds.
After Kim crossed the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge on Saturday, posts from residents about the restrictions circulated on Chinese social media throughout the day.
According to videos posted on WeChat, all highways into and out of Dandong except the route toward Fengcheng were closed, and bus services linking outlying areas to downtown Dandong were suspended.
