The Korean Peninsula has a persistent land mine problem that was recently highlighted by another explosion inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), injuring three South Korean soldiers during a route-clearing operation in the western sector of the boundary area. 

Seoul subsequently announced its initial assessment that the mines likely originated from North Korea and may have been emplaced during the Korean People’s Army’s boundary hardening efforts in the area in Sept. 2025.

Some have arguedthat this is an illustration of escalating tensions with North Korea. Others contend that the Lee Jae Myung administration is doing whatever possible to avoid
