North Korea-linked cybercriminals have compromised a popular software tool used by thousands of companies around the world, according to Google researchers, seeking to steal information that can be used for future attacks and cryptocurrency theft.

The breach took place on Tuesday and targeted Axios, a tool that facilitates information exchanges between servers and web applications, Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) said in a report the following day.

In the attack, the cybercriminals introduced malware into Axios that deploys a backdoor across major operating systems like Windows, macOS and Linux, giving the attackers access to victims’ systems.

GTIG attributed the attack
