Seoul backs UN resolution condemning North Korea’s human rights abuses

Decision comes after activists, politicians raised alarm over reports that South Korea might not sponsor the measure

South Korea has decided to co-sponsor a forthcoming U.N. resolution on North Korea’s human rights abuses, after reports that Seoul might not sponsor the measure drew criticism from activists and politicians.

“In line with our stance of working with the international community for the substantial improvement of North Korean citizens’ human rights, we have decided to participate as a co-sponsor of the North Korean human rights resolution following discussions within relevant government agencies,” a spokesperson from Seoul’s Foreign Ministry told NK News on Monday.

The U.N. Human Rights Council’s resolution seeks to hold Pyongyang accountable for various human rights violations,
