North Korea’s ambassador to China gave a rare interview to Chinese media at an event in Beijing last week, offering brief remarks on the “positive” outlook for bilateral ties.

According to Phoenix Television, Ri Ryong Nam spoke to the outlet at a New Year reception hosted by the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Feb. 5. 

While Ri has regularly attended diplomatic events, he had previously avoided contact with reporters, according to Phoenix Television. The interview marked his first time answering media questions since arriving in Beijing in Feb. 2021.
