A defector has filed lawsuits in South Korea against North Korea and leader Kim Jong Un, seeking justice for crimes against humanity committed inside the DPRK’s detention facilities.

The escapee Choi Min-kyeong testified she suffered repeated sexual violence and torture during approximately five months of detention in the North. She is now demanding accountability for these abuses, filing a civil lawsuit against the DPRK government and a separate criminal complaint against Kim and five other North Korean officials.

At a press conference held Friday before filing the lawsuits, she expressed hope that Kim will face the death penalty.
