Seoul imposes new sanctions on North Korea over latest ICBM launch

Export controls target key components for solid-fuel missiles amid signs DPRK continues to source parts from abroad

South Korea imposed new export sanctions on North Korea to prevent it from obtaining key materials for solid-propellant missile production on Thursday, in retaliation against Pyongyang’s launch of a long-range ballistic missile earlier in the day.

Seoul’s foreign ministry stated that the launch poses a threat to “peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and the international community” in its announcement on the new measures “restricting North Korea’s ballistic missile development.”

In total, the export controls cover 15 components “essential for the development and production of solid-fuel missiles” that North Korea finds difficult to produce domestically, the ministry said.
