North Korea to hold meeting to review virus policy as it reports no COVID cases

Announcement raises possibility DPRK could further loosen epidemic restrictions following outbreak earlier this year

North Korea’s ruling party will hold a major meeting this month to review “emergency anti-epidemic work,” according to state media, as the country has now reported no new suspected cases of COVID-19 for 10 consecutive days.

The Workers’ Party of Korea’s Central Committee will hold the “national meeting” on an unspecified date in August to “review successes, experiences and lessons” of anti-epidemic policy and “confirm a new orientation,” Korean Central News Agency reported Saturday.

The announcement raises the possibility that North Korea will further loosen restrictions put in place in May following the start of its first-known COVID-19 outbreak, or
