UNICEF aid reaches North Korean capital after almost two-year delay

Humanitarian organizations say DPRK’s border restrictions have held up shipments of key assistance throughout pandemic

The last of a batch of critical humanitarian aid has finally reached Pyongyang, taking nearly two years to move from China to North Korea, according to the U.N. International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

The supplies include folic acid tablets, nutrient-dense rations and enough micronutrient powders to support nearly half a million children, UNICEF said in a situation report published Tuesday.

The aid, which had been held in Dalian from late 2020 before being shipped to the DPRK in late 2021, reached Pyongyang’s Central Medical Warehouse and the Ministry of Public Health by the end of June, according to the report.
