Moon vows last-minute push to engage North Korea as his term nears end

South Korean leader says dialogue with Pyongyang is ‘not complete yet,’ as parliament preps for budget review

South Korean President Moon Jae-in pledged on Monday to push for engagement with Pyongyang until the end of his presidency, stating that talks with North Korea remain unfinished.

In a 35-minute policy speech at the National Assembly, Moon also celebrated his administration’s accomplishments in inter-Korean relations, which he said have opened the door for peace, as well as Seoul’s pandemic response.

His remarks came as lawmakers prepare to audit the government’s proposal for a record-high budget of $517 billion (604 trillion won).

“The dialogue is not complete yet,” said Moon, who has less than seven months left in his term.
